ARK Innovation is one of the leading model portfolios and has become a household name in the last year, but it looks like the bubble has finally popped or at least deflated. Huge losses in big holders like Zoom, Teladoc Health, and Roku are down over 30% and the only thing keeping the fund floating has been a stellar Tesla performance. This has many investors worried about the broader market because equity prices are inflated. Furthermore, the gap between large-cap growth stocks and smaller caps is as wide as it has been since 2000. Maybe this means an equity bubble could pop, but it could just mean small caps have more value now than ever.

FINSUM: High P/E ratios should have investors cautious at the very least. If the Fed threatens to huff and puff anymore the whole house could come down!

Some trends were definitely starting to take hold in 2021, but those are going to continue to flourish in 2022. The first of which is an active fund take over, as it appears active fund starts will outpace passive funds and see huge inflows on top of it. The next biggest trend will be more RIA’s rolling up their proprietary model portfolios into ETF launches. These model-based funds are the best way for professionals to package their expertise and deliver it effectively to clients. A number of recent SEC policies make it easier for a variety of ETF launches to happen this year so expect this explosion to continue in 2022.

FINSUM: It makes sense that model portfolios will explode, firms can be more transparent about their areas of expertise by delivering them in fund form explicitly.

Model Portfolios Setting Records

Model portfolios are being adopted by advisors at lightening speed, and that is turning itself into one of the fastest growing asset classes. This year model portfolios upped their holdings to $4.9 trillion, almost a 29% increase from the prior year. Companies like BlackRock have really leveraged model portfolios to fight inflation and changes to their portfolios yielded billions in inflows earlier this year. They aren’t just used to hedge against inflation they are being used to pick out ‘fallen angel’ corporate bonds which have a chance to ditch their junk bond status. Model portfolios allow for these tweaks which can more rapidly adjust to the macro changes in the economy.

FINSUM: Model portfolios give investors wider access to more quantitative methods which can outperform in the more volatile times like we are in now.

New Model Portfolios For Income

Model portfolio provider FE Investments is launching two new products: initial income retirement portfolio and long term retirement portfolio. The initial income portfolio is designed to mitigate risk in the early stages of retirement and has a low correlation with stocks. The second portfolio aims to keep investors from running out of finances throughout retirement with more equity exposure by targeting growth over a longer horizon. Both portfolios are trying to help retirees with the decumulation of their portfolios as they begin to retire. Overall this will expand the products they can extend to their customers. FINSUM: Model portfolios are giving investors better options than ever to target the risks they want exposure to in their finances whether that's retirement risk or anti-inflation strategies.
