Trump Looks Poised to Fire Mueller

(Washington)

The standoff between the president and special counsel Robert Mueller is heating up once again. On Monday, federal agents raided the offices of Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen, which Trump vehemently protested in the media. This has led to speculation Trump may now move to fire Mueller. In response, the White House officially said yesterday that they felt doing so was within the president’s authority. GOP lawmakers have warned Trump not to do so, but say they will not protect Mueller.

FINSUM: Whether or not Trump is allowed to fire Mueller, we think it would cause an unprecedented political firestorm if he were to do so. Just look at what happened to Nixon after he fired a special counsel.

McConnell Stands Behind Mueller in Trump Probe

(Washington)

Though he had remained silent on the issue for three days, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has finally spoken out on the Trump-Mueller tension. McConnell held a press conference yesterday to commend the job Robert Mueller is doing and to admonish the President to let him finish his investigation. McConnell said Mueller “should be allowed to finish his job”, and that “I don’t think Bob Mueller is going anywhere … I have a lot of confidence in him”. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also said that if Trump tried to fire Mueller without cause than it would be an impeachable offense.

FINSUM: We think Trump is sharp enough not to try to fire Mueller as it would create an absolute political nightmare.

This weekend saw President Trump escalate his attacks on Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation. Trump and his lawyers launched a public campaign to condemn the investigation which included Trump’s first tweets targeting Mueller by name. Trump tweeted that the investigation “should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime”, saying that the Mueller investigation was being led by “hardened Democrats” intent on taking down the Republican president. Trump’s more aggressive stance than in previous months led to several warnings from senators on both sides of the aisle that he should not try to end the investigation.

FINSUM: One keeps wondering if some bombshell accusation is going to arise from this investigation or whether it will end up being a long waste of time.

Mueller Just Subpoenaed Trump

(Washington)

Special counsel Robert Mueller may very well have just crossed one of Trump’s red lines in his investigation into the White House’s connections to Russia. Mueller has just subpoenaed the Trump organization. The Trump organization has been voluntarily giving the special counsel documents to assist with its investigation, but now faces an official subpoena. The tactic mirrors the approach used by Mueller during his investigation into the White House itself. The story of the subpoena was first issued by the New York Times.

FINSUM: It will be interesting to see how sharply, if at all, Trump reacts to this move. Is this the action that moves him to try to end the investigation?

Mueller May Delay Trump Charge

(Washington)

The word is that Robert Mueller’s probe into a possible obstruction of justice charge against President Trump is almost concluded, but that he is thinking to delay filing to charge to allow him to wrap up other facets of the investigation. The reason why is that the Mueller team reportedly thinks filing the charges would make it harder to finish the rest of the investigation because of an increasing lack of cooperativeness on the part of witnesses, in addition to Trump likely moving to shut the investigation down.

FINSUM: If Mueller actually filed charges against Trump it would be a monumental political bombshell. Mueller is sharp enough to not try to do that half-cocked.
